RESEARCH ACTIVITY

The scientific school: Fundamental and applied electrochemical investigations and developments in the fields of electronically conducting polymers, novel composites based on graphite and carbonaceous materials, non-noble metal catalysts and other promised materials for lithium, lithium-ion, air-metal batteries, fuel cells, supercapacitors, electrochemical reactors, etc.

Supervisor: Professor, Dr. Sc. (Chemistry) Viacheslav Z. Barsukov, head of Department

Prof. Viacheslav Barsukov, Head of Department for Electrochemical Power Engineering & Chemistry, received his BSc in Chemical Technology in 1971, his PhD in Electrochemistry in 1974, Dr. Sc. in Electrochemistry in 1985 (Dnepropetrovsk Chemical Technological University) and Professor Degree in Electrochemistry in 1992 (Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences). He has been working in the field of fundamental and technical electrochemistry since 1971 and is the co-author of more than 350 publications, including 3 books, 130 refereed journal publications and 15 patents. He is the 1st Prize-winner at the International Patent & Innovation Competition, Germany (1994).

Prof. Viacheslav Barsukov was a supervisor for 8 Ph.D. dissertations; he is the member of editorial boards of 3 research journals, including 2 international; member of two International Societies (ISE, ECS).

Prof. Viacheslav Barsukov has been involved (mostly as a team leader) in more than 20 national and international projects including 12 international projects of INTAS, NATO Science for Peace, CRDF, US DOE's Initiatives for Proliferation Prevention (IPP) Programs, FP6 and FP7 EC Programs.

The responsible person for many projects was/is senior researcher Volodymyr G. Khomenko.

The Department of Electrochemical Power Engineering & Chemistry is well equipped with all necessary equipment for the R&D of novel materials for batteries, fuel cells, supercapacitors, different electrochemical reactors and cells. The team has facilities for developing the concept cell of batteries, cell design, technology and troubleshooting, cell optimization studies, cell failure analysis including investigations with internal and external reference electrodes. Also a set of analytical and physical-chemical techniques for analysis and preparation of electrodes materials for different power sources is available.

The main available equipment is as following:

  • SOLAAR S4 Double Beam Automatic Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (from ThermoElectron Co., USA)
  • Argon Glove box UNILAB (from MBraun Inc., USA)
  • Two automatic battery 32-channel battery test systems (from Latvia and Ukraine)
  • Automatic battery ARBIN 32-channel battery test system (from Arbin Instruments Co., Texas, USA)
  • VMP3 automatic multi-channel potentiostat/galvanostat with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (from Princeton Applied Research, UK) and rotating disc electrode (from St. Petersburg, Russia)
  • Different technological equipment for coin batteries producing (sizes of 2016, 2325, etc.)
  • General laboratory equipment for synthesis of composite materials (two chemical reactors for synthesis and purifications of different materials and composites from Simax Co., Czech Republic; two furnaces with temperature and gas control, high-speed mixer with viscosity control, etc.)
