Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design (KNUTD) is a multidisciplinary educational, scientific and innovative complex with a well-developed infrastructure and modern material and technical base, which provides multi-level training of qualified specialists in various specialties. The University is a leader in training specialists in light and chemical industries, fashion industry, business, artistic and technical modelling and design of industrial products, art, economics and consumer services, law, etc. It is one of the oldest technological institutions of higher education in the country. The University has a number of unique scientific schools that carry out research and innovation activities and they are recognized both in Ukraine and abroad.

Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design was founded on April 17, 1930 by the Order of the High Council of National Economy № 1240 as the Institute of Leather Industry. Since this date, it is believed that the history of the University begins. The studies of the origins of training specialists show that it can actually be attributed to the early ХІХ century, when the professional training of artisans, who made goods from leather, fur, textiles by artisanal and cooperative methods, was started. However, this topic is still awaiting thorough research.

Since 1944, the institution of higher education was called Kyiv Technological Institute of Light Industry (KTILP); since 1993 – the State Academy of Light Industry of Ukraine (SALIU); since 1999 - Kyiv State University of Technologies and Design (KSUTD); since 2001 - Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design.

Over the years of fruitful activity, tens of thousands of specialists have been trained for the economy of Ukraine, as well as for the countries of Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America. This demonstrates the University's ability to compete in the global market for educational services.

The University is proud of its academic staff and research schools. The main achievement and pride are our alumni, who form a strong engineering and technical basis not only in the light and chemical industries, but also in business, design, consumer services, defense and instrumentation. Among our alumni, there are government officials and public authorities at various levels, scientists, famous designers, successful leaders and businesspersons, specialists in various fields of life.

The University operates in accordance with the legislation of Ukraine and the Charter of the University.

The mission of the University is to promote sustainable development of the region and the country; meet the educational needs of the population regardless of place of residence/stay; train competitive specialists for the economy; participate actively in the personal development of each person, his education and improvement of abilities.

The purpose of the University is to teach and educate young people; provide high-quality educational services necessary for society, regardless of the place of residence / stay of consumers; develop the personal potential of participants in the educational and scientific process, their creative abilities, active social and civic position.

The goal is to position the formation of KNUTD as the best and most influential university of applied research at the international level with a high-quality educational and scientific reputation.

The task of the University is to ensure high-quality educational activities for higher education seekers in compliance with safety conditions; development of scientific research and transfer of technologies and innovations to the real sector of the economy; integration into the world market of science and education.

Emphasizing the achieved level of development and taking into account today's challenges, one of the tasks of the University is its transformation into a leading research and educational-scientific center for the training of highly qualified specialists, scientific and academic personnel of the highest qualification.

The performance of important functions assigned to the University in terms of training specialists, formation of the national elite of Ukraine, promotion of Ukraine's integration into the European and world economic, educational and scientific space as an equal partner, requires the effective development of scientific research and the transfer of technologies to the real sector of the national economy, active participation in socio-economic development of territories. We focus on working on the principles of sustainable development of an entrepreneurial university.

National and international recognition

The University has a high professional and educational recognition, confirming its competitiveness in positions of national and international rankings. Currently, the highest achievement of KNUTD is inclusion in one of the most influential international university rankings QS World University Rankings: EECA - regional ranking of universities in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The QS rating evaluates the educational and scientific activity of universities based on the results of surveys of more than 140 thousand experts, academicians, employers, as well as indicators of scientific, international and educational activity. Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design took 551-600th place among 688 universities in Europe, 81st place in Eastern Europe, 13th place among 33 Ukrainian universities and 5th place among Kyiv universities.

In addition, in 2023, for the first time in the history of the ranking from the most prestigious international ranking of higher education institutions, QS WORLD UNIVERSITY RANKINGS, our University entered the world ranking for the educational program: "Art and Design" QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023 (https://knutd.edu.ua/hot-news/15044/) and was qualified in this segment from 201 to 240 positions in the world, while taking the first and only place in Ukraine! It is worth noting that in the entire history of the rating by subject, no Ukrainian higher education institution has been awarded such a high rating!

A significant recognition is also the high evaluation of our scientific and educational activities by the American magazine "CEOWORLD Magazine", which is a leading international business magazine for senior executives, business leaders and wealthy people, which published the results of the annual Ranking of the Best Design Schools in the World in 2023. Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design ranked 54th among the world's best fashion and design schools in the 2023 Ranking. For the university community, it is an honor to be the only representative from Ukraine and Eastern Europe on the educational market. Every year KNUTD increases its significance and position both at the national and world level.

American "CEOWORLD Magazine", which is a leader in the world of business and technology, published the results of the annual ranking of the best design schools in the world in 2023.

In 2016, KNUTD took 88^th place, and seven years later our position rose by 34 positions. This achievement is the result of improving the quality of education at the university, effective work of academic staff, increasing the scientific potential of scientists, designers, high achievements of students, graduates and the activities of the Rectorate and the Academic Council.

This year, CEOWORLD Magazine surveyed 185,000 executives, graduates, global influencers, fashion industry professionals, fashion schoolteachers, employers and recruiters in 200 countries between November 15, 2022 and February 22, 2023. Ten percent of the interviews were conducted by telephone, 82% were conducted online, and 8% were conducted by mail or in person. All quantitative interviews were conducted confidentially without relying on data provided by institutions. The rating is based on seven main indicators of quality and reputation. The total score (100%) is the sum of the scores: 1. Perception of the influence of global brands (20%); 2. Reviews of recruiters (20%); 3. Feedback from employers (10%); 4. Employment level (10%); 5. The right to admission (10%); 6. Specialization (10%); 7. Academic reputation (20%).

Also, for the third time, "CEOWORLD Magazine" included KNUTD in the world ranking of TOP-100 best scientific schools and universities that provide training of highly qualified specialists in the field of medicine and pharmacy. In the 2022 ranking, our University took 61st place, improving by four positions on the previous achievement.

In December 2022, based on the results of an expert evaluation, Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design  was again included in the "Green Metric World University Rankings", which gives the University the opportunity to become a member of the global network of higher education institutions implementing the sustainable development paradigm, the content of which is the interaction and integration of economic, social and ecological dimensions. So, this year KNUTD took the 8th position among the higher education institutions of Ukraine, moving up 7 places compared to 2021.

According to the "WEBOMETRICS" ranking by Cybermetrics Lab (Spain) published in January 2023, the University took 24th place among 306 higher education institutions of Ukraine.

In December 2021, the University was first included in the influential international ranking of institutions of higher education SCImago Institutions Ranking. The rating is based on three groups of indicators. The indicator of scientific and educational activity considers the volume, impact and quality of the research result of the institution. The innovation indicator is calculated on the basis of the number of patent applications of the institution and citations that receive its research results from patents. The social indicator is based on the number of pages of the institution's website and the number of backlinks from social networks.  Currently, the university ranks 17th out of 49 selected higher education institutions from Ukraine (https://www.scimagoir.com/rankings.php?sector=Higher+educ.&country=UKR).

The University is one of the first Ukrainian institutions of higher education to pass independent external audits conducted by the national certification centre "STANDARD" and the international certification centre "QMSCERT" (Italy). As a result, it received certificates of compliance with the international standard ISO 9001 : 2015, which confirmed that the University has a highly qualified team of scientific, academic and administrative staff; processes related to providing educational services are performed at a high professional level. It should be mentioned as well that normative and legal tools of the system of internal quality assurance of educational activity have been developed; the regulations and instructions are documented and communicated to the staff who follow them; effective means of quality management system control are used.

According to the scientometric database "SCOPUS" in 2022, following the number of citations by the world scientific community of publications of University scientists and the Hirsch index KNUTD ranks 40^th among institutions of higher education of Ukraine with h = 24.

Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design also holds high positions according to the results of the consolidated ranking of Ukrainian universities "Osvita.ua" and is one of the ten best universities in Ukraine according to the ranking "TOP-200 Ukraine" in the group of technical universities.

 

Educational activities

KNUTD is developing through the team transformation into a business university. The educational and research activities of the academic staff are aimed at developing entrepreneurial culture and designing cooperation with the business community and employers, carrying out various activities to promote innovation and arts.

Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design trains about 9,000 applicants at all levels of higher education (including 1,626 foreign students), as well as professional pre-university education.

In addition to educational and scientific processes, seekers for higher education take an active part in the social, cultural and sports life of the University and the city of Kyiv. Many students are involved in art groups and creative studios.  Students take part in the all-Ukrainian student vocal art competition "Zirkova Pisnia", the competition of startup projects "Innovation in education, science, business: challenges and opportunities", the international competition of young designers "DIGITAL FASHION", the all-Ukrainian student competition for the development of web pages "WEB-technologist", International competition of one image and New Year's and Christmas decoration "Suzirya Kashtan", all-Ukrainian competition of student research papers, weeks of foreign languages, as well as in sports tournaments, competitions, etc. The traditional international competition "Pecherski Kashtany" is a real extravaganza of talented young designers who can be envied even by well-known experts.

The creative teams of KNUTD show their talent in the city and all-Ukrainian artistic festivals, competitions, reviews, as well as at international festivals, they give performances in many universities of the capital.

At the University, students have the opportunity to practice such sports as: football, volleyball, basketball, badminton, table tennis, gymnastics and bullet shooting. We are proud of our outstanding athletes who achieved high results while studying at the University: Olena Kostevych - Honored Master of Sports of Ukraine in bullet shooting, champion of the Olympic Games, world and Europe; Natalia Serhiyenko - Honored Master of Sports of Ukraine, champion of the Deflympic Games, champion of the world, Europe, and Universiade in table tennis; Mariana Stoianovych - Master of Sports of the international class in judo and sumo, silver medalist of the European Youth Championship; Bohdan Honcharenko - Master of Sports of the international class in karate, multiple champion of Ukraine, Europe and the world; Artem Konovalov - Master of Sports of Ukraine in karate, champion of Ukraine, Europe and the world; a student of Bdgar Khosrovya, who won the World Karate Championship, etc.

 

Research and innovation activities and development of artistic potential

Our University is a centre of science, innovation, thoughts, ideas, developments, and research. Involvement of researchers of different generations, united by a common goal, program and style of research under the leadership of recognized scientists, allowed to ensure high efficiency of research, its dissemination and implementation, as well as to reproduce scientific research at a qualitatively new level. Today, Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design has formed and operates scientific and artistic schools that have made a significant contribution to the development of science and culture on a national and international scale. And, of course, in the future, research at the University will deepen and develop, approaching the world level.

At Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design, research activities are conducted within 16 scientific schools:

1. Development of theoretical and applied bases of higher education economics, professional training for business management.

2. Electrochemical energy, protection against electromagnetic radiation.

3. Scientific and practical principles of creating multifunctional textile materials and products with predictable properties.

4. Dynamics of liquid and quasi-liquid media in the technological equipment of light industry.

5. Physico-chemical bases of collagen structure formation in leather and fur production.

6. Technical and organizational bases for improving product quality based on modern methods of metrology, standardization and certification.

7. Design, ergonomics and technical aesthetics.

8. Scientific bases of development, creation and fixing of the internal form of footwear and assortment.

9. Improving methods for designing light industry machines.

10. Structural polymeric materials and composites.

11. Dyeing of textile materials with dyes formed on the fibre.

12. Computer graphic spatial design.

13. Scientific bases of creation of adaptive devices and sensory systems for control of parameters of technological processes, environment and an assessment of their impact on a physical and mental condition of the person.

14. Development of theoretical foundations of new technologies for the production of fine fibres.

15. Mathematical modelling, algorithmic and CAD software.

16. Socially-oriented garments and textiles for people with disabilities, the seriously ill and other people with limited mobility.

There are three art schools at Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design:

1. Movement in space and time.

2. Research of tectonic structure of a suit in development of perspective collections of clothes.

3. Ukrainian graphic art and design.

The University has established and runs 29 research laboratories, including the Center for Collective Use of Scientific Equipment "Additive Production Technologies" (3D printing) and Analytical Research Laboratory "Textile Test".

Among the scientific and academic staff of KNUTD, there is 1 Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, 1 Academician of the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine, 6 Honoured Workers of Science and Technology of Ukraine, 5 Honoured Workers of Public Education of Ukraine, 1 Honoured Economist of Ukraine, 1 Honoured Industry Worker of Ukraine, 1 Honoured Worker of the Service Sector of Ukraine, 1 Honoured Architect of Ukraine, 1 Honoured Art Worker of Ukraine.

During the existence of the University, 31 scientists received the title of "Laureate of the State Award of Ukraine in Science and Technology".

Scientists of the University were also awarded the National Prize of Ukraine named after Boris Paton. Its laureates were 10 scientists of the University.

– grant under the NATO Program G 5772 “Science for Peace and Security: Portable soldier charger project”;

– grant under the NATO G NATO G 6053 Programs “Science for Peace and Security: Inhibition of bacterial sedimentation and biofilm formation by means of physical control of the environment”;

– project within the framework of P645B partnership agreement with the STCU “American Energy Technologies Company (AETS), Chicago, USA”;

– project “Marketing development of the University’s eco-territory for the recreation of post-COVID people” (2023-2024), within the framework of the joint Ukrainian-Turkish cooperation program;

– project within the framework of the Ukrainian-Slovak cooperation “Improvement of energy management of hybrid photovoltaic systems of local facilities with energy storage”;

– research work within the framework of a competition under the state target scientific and technical program for research in the Antarctic “Study of biofilm formation in model microbial communities associated with vascular plants of the Antarctic”.

Publication activity of the academic staff of KNUTD: in international editions indexed in Scopus database, scientific and pedagogical workers of the University published 156 scientific articles, in Web of Science – 67 scientific articles compared to the previous year (in 2022, in Scopus – 137, in Web of Science – 99). The share of publications per 1 academic staff member in editions indexed in the scientometric databases Scopus and Web of Science Core Collection in 2023 is 0.7 compared to the previous year 2022 – 0.77. The H-index of the University in 2023 was 27 (against 24 last year).

As of January 1, 2024, the scientometric database Web of Science Core Collection has indexed 795 documents (a 20.8% increase compared to last year’s figure of 729, as of January 1, 2023), whose authors indicated Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design as their place of work/study.

In 2023, the publication output consisted of 1514 printed works, including: 15 monographs published in Ukraine, 12 published abroad; 11 textbooks and manuals.  The number of professional scientific articles is 540, including 141 published in foreign journals.

The University researches took part in 535 conferences, including 436 international conferences and 99 national conferences; 36 seminars and 14 round tables. The number of reports at the conferences is 936, including 627 at the international level. The University hosted 15 conferences, 9 of which were international.

In 2023, for the first time, the University launched and held the International Competition of Student Research Papers in 3 scientific areas: Art and Design; Fashion industry; Public and Corporate Management. 226 higher education seekers from 47 institutions took part in the Competition. 193 research papers from 9 participating countries were submitted. As a result, 23 works of students from our University became the winners of the Competition.

As part of the 4th All-Ukrainian Conference of Higher Education Seekers and Young Scientists "Innovation in Education, Science and Business: Challenges and Opportunities", the All-Ukrainian Competition of Startup Projects "BEST STARTUP of KNUTD 2023" was traditionally held, in which 35 startup projects from higher education seekers took part. KNUTD and other higher education institutions of Ukraine (in 2022 – 32 start-up projects).

Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design publishes scientific journals and professional periodicals in Ukrainian, English, and Polish: "Technology and Engineering", "Journal of Strategic Economic Research", "Management", "ART & DESIGN", "Fashion Industry" and electronic scientific journal "Engineering", which are included in the list of scientific professional publications of Ukraine, Category B.

The University offers post-graduate and doctoral courses. In 2023, 4 doctoral dissertations, 1 PhD dissertation, and 9 dissertation studies for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy were defended. The University had 6 doctoral academic councils and 11 one-time academic councils in 2023. UAH 102 thousand was received from the organisation and conduct of the dissertation defence procedure. The efficiency of postgraduate studies in 2023 was 56%, the efficiency of doctoral studies was 50%.

Dissertation studies are carried out within the framework of international, state budget and scientific research works of departments and 84 initiative topics (against 67 initiative topics in 2022), which have state registration in UkrINTEI.

Currently, the University trains Doctors of Philosophy in 17 specialties and Doctors of Sciences in 10 specialties. The work of the scientific schools of the University continues, and in response to the challenges of the times, the directions of scientific research are being reoriented in order to rebuild our state and overcome the consequences of military actions.

Scholarships and awards of young scientists: In 2023, 3 scientists will continue to receive the scholarship of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine. Scholarship of the President of Ukraine - 2 graduate students; Scholarship of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China for graduate students - 2 graduate students.

For eight years now, the Educational Investment and Technology Cluster of Light Industry has been operating on the base of Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design in the city of Kyiv. On April 11, 2023, its partnership was joined by a new academic stakeholder, Lviv University of Trade and Economics. Cluster members will implement joint projects to gain competitive advantages by consolidating the efforts of all participants to achieve a synergistic effect of the development of not only cluster members but also the cities of Kyiv and Lviv as a whole, this is a new "architecture" and "design of cooperation between business, science and government". Within the framework of this event, the Rector, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine I.M. Gryshchenko and the deputy chairman of the Cluster Council, the director of TOV RA.DA A.S. Prokhorovskyi, presented the results of the Cluster's work in wartime conditions.

Research and innovative activities in the context of a full-scale war was aimed primarily at the preservation, development and use of scientific-technical and scientific-artistic potential, the involvement of academic staff in cooperation with specialized defense enterprises, the educational and investment cluster of light industry, business associations and other participants of the ecosystem by conducting joint research, commercializing their results and transferring technologies to strengthen the defense capabilities of our country, to train highly qualified scientific and pedagogical personnel to improve the quality and effectiveness of scientific research results of Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design for the recovery and development of the economy of Ukraine in general.

As part of the implementation of the "Internationalization Program of Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design for 2024-2028", the University successfully increased the level of international cooperation in the field of educational and research activities, forming an effective system of international relationships capable of contributing to the fulfillment of the institution's strategic tasks.

In the extremely difficult conditions of the military aggression of the russian invaders, the University solved the strategic tasks of the international vector of development, supporting and promoting the positive image of the University in the world educational space and increasing its own competitiveness in the international arena of the educational services market, adapting the best experience of the world universities and introducing it into the practice of the University according to its all directions.

The effectiveness of international activities is confirmed by 60 bilateral agreements on research and educational cooperation with universities and institutions in 27 countries of the world. In 2023, 15 new agreements were concluded with the leading Baltic universities, in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Turkey, the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Azerbaijan, Moldova, and others. The agreements provide for joint scientific research, promote the development of international cooperation between institutions of higher education.

Despite the difficult wartime conditions, teachers, students, graduate students and employees of the University did everything possible for the relatively full-fledged work of the University and the development of international cooperation.

The EU Erasmus+ program at the University is implemented taking into account the provisions of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU on issues of education, youth, sports, civil society, and internal regulations approved by the Academic Council.

The University is an active participant of this program in the field of higher education in international academic mobility, cooperation between universities and European studies, as well as other directions and areas, in particular:

CA 1. Academic mobility. International (credit) mobility is implemented by students and teachers from 12 European universities, namely: Birmingham City University (Great Britain), Hellenic Mediterranean University (Greece) and Baltic International Academy (Latvia), Ege University (Turkey), Vytautas Magnus University (Lithuania ), Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, (Switzerland), Matej Bel University (Slovak Republic), University of Applied Sciences “Lavoslav Ružička” (Croatia), Estonian Entrepreneurship University of Applied Sciences (Estonia), the University of Applied Sciences and Arts (Belgium), the Higher School of Management (Republic of Poland), the Higher School of Management and Administration (Republic of Poland), the Higher School of Business in Dombrowa Gurnicz (Republic of Poland ), Abylkas Saginov Karaganda Technical University (Kazakhstan), Mingachevir State University (Azeyprbajan), and others. About 1,000 representatives of the University (academic staff members and higher education seekers) took part in international academic mobility events (internships, practice, forums, round tables, training sessions, etc.) in various formats of participation.

The direction "Jean Monet" within the Erasmus+ project in 2024 is successfully implemented by teachers and students of the Faculty of Management and Business Design under the module "Promoting the development of European skills and approaches for a sustainable bioeconomy in the conditions of acute challenges of Ukraine".

 

CA 2. Erasmus+ projects for the development of innovations and exchange of successful practices. Thus, in 2024, the University will successfully implement the projects of the "International Network of Virtual Youth Business Hubs" by teachers and students of the Faculty of Management and Business Design. The projects "European Fashion TEX Academy of Young Designers for the Study of Innovative Technologies in Digital Clothing Design" and "3D Concepts for Fashion Education in Ukraine" are implemented by students and teachers of the Faculty of Arts and Fashion.

Cooperation is carried out under the twinning program with the partner Sheffield Hallam University (Great Britain).

With the assistance of the DAAD international organization, in 2024, the University successfully introduced and implemented the project "Digital Ukraine: Ensuring academic success during the crisis" together with the Technical University of Berlin (Germany). "Upgrading the content and improving the teaching quality of online courses in computer engineering" jointly with the Cooperative State University of Baden-Württemberg (Germany).

Systematic and purposeful work of the University on the development of international cooperation and the export of educational services outside of Ukraine made it possible in 2023/2024, compared to previous years, to significantly increase the number of students from other countries – 1,626 foreign citizens from more than 20 countries of the world

The University successfully runs 3 English-language educational programs in the specialties 073 Management, 122 Computer Science and 226 Industrial Pharmacy.

Foreign students take an active part in the educational, artistic, sports, volunteer and scientific activities of the University.

Within the framework of the Chinese-Ukrainian project with Qilu University of Technology, 1,026 students are currently being trained in the specialties 022 Design, 161 Chemical technologies and Engineering, 162 Biotechnology and Bioengineering. Also, 57 people are getting higher education at the third (educational and scientific) level of higher education in the specialty 022 Design, for which an agreement was signed with Shaanxi University of Science and Technology.

Thus, the main content of the educational activity of the Kyiv College of Qilu University of Technology (KIQUT) and cooperation with Shaanxi University of Science and Technology is the formation of an innovative cross-cultural Ukrainian-Chinese educational environment, the introduction of the latest educational innovative technologies and the improvement of the quality of education, the development of science and international mobility of students, postgraduate students, teachers, as well as joint management of PhD works, ensuring the competitiveness of Ukrainian education in the world market of educational services.

In 2024, KNUTD actively continues to participate in the activities of international organizations, representing the scientific and educational community of Ukraine in some of them. Currently, Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design is a member of such educational and professional European and international organizations as:

- Great Charter of Universities (Magna Charta Universitatum);

- International Association of Universities (IAU);

- International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media (CUMULUS) – the only representative from Ukraine;

- International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP);

- International Federation of Knitwear Technologists (IFKT) – the only representative from Ukraine;

- Association of Universities for Textiles (AUTEX);

- German-Ukrainian Society of Economics and Science (DUG WW) – the only representative from Ukraine and other countries.

Radchenko - Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine (1994-1995), Head of the Security Service of Ukraine (1995-1998, 2001-2003), Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (2003-2005), Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine (12.01. – 25.05.2007), awarded the military rank of General of the Army since 1998; O.G. Lozhechnikov - Major General of the Security Service of Ukraine, President of the Ukrainian National Service for Economic Security and Investment Protection; M.V. Tsenov - Major General of Police, First Deputy Chief of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine.

We have many successful alumni working in the leading pharmaceutical companies of Ukraine: PJSC "Darnytsia", PJSC "Farmak", Corporation "Arterium", PJSC "Kyivmedpreparat", PJSC "Borschagovsky HFZ" and others.
