THE FIRST STAGE OF THE XXIV PETRO JACYK INTERNATIONAL UKRAINIAN LANGUAGE COMPETITION TOOK PLACE AT KYIV NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGIES AND DESIGN

The student and teaching community of the Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design cherishes the Ukrainian language. Our applicants not only speak Ukrainian, but also, under the guidance of experienced teachers, are happy to master the culture of business communication in Ukrainian, diligently overcome the grammatical difficulties of our language or even prepare to become a teacher of Ukrainian.

On the eve of the competition, teachers from the Department of Philology and Translation of the Institute of Law and Modern Technologies told their students about Petro Jacyk, a Canadian businessman of Ukrainian descent, philanthropist and patron of the arts, known for his significant contribution to the funding of Ukrainian studies in the West and in Ukraine. “As a Ukrainian, I have to build myself,” Petro Jacyk used to say. The philanthropist was particularly proud of the Ukrainian language contest he initiated and funded, which has been attended by thousands of Ukrainian pupils and students since 2001.

On 10 November 2023, the members of the organising committee of the first stage of the XXIV Petro Jacyk International Ukrainian Language Competition – Professor Ivan Dzyra, Associate Professor Svitlana Dvorianchykova and Senior Lecturer Liudmyla Roienko – were pleased to see that there were so many people willing to take part in the event at KNUTD. The applicants were excited to perform the proposed tasks: they put accents in words, formed the case forms, corrected statements, placed punctuation marks in sentences, and wrote an opinion essay on the topic: “The language disappears not because others do not teach it, but because those who know it, do not speak it.”

The competent jury determined the winners of the first stage of the competition, who will take part in the next stages of the Ukrainian language competition.

The winners of the first stage were Olexandra Shevtsova (BVU-23, 1st place), Mariia Melnyk (BSEP-23, 2nd place), and Yelyzaveta Kovalyshyna (BP-23, 3rd place). As you know, the winners of the fourth stage of the Petro Jacyk International Ukrainian Language Competition are traditionally awarded monthly scholarships from the President of Ukraine for a calendar year. We wish our talented students success!
