The scientific and pedagogical staff of the Department founded the art school “Research on the Tectonic Structure of the Costume in the Development of Promising Clothing Collections” where the study of the patterns of functioning of fashion and formation of promising costume forms and the development of modern fashion is carried out (founder of the school – T.V. Nikolaeva).
The art school of Department works in the direction of researches and improvement of process of design of the new range of clothes, tectonic structure of a suit in development of perspective collections and techniques of reconstrucfounder of the schoolon of historical and national clothes (research supervisors – professors: K.L. Pashkevych, T.F. Krotova, O.V. Kolosnichenko, N.V. Chuprina).
Examples of the complex scientific and creative work of the Department are the development of branded clothing for the border and customs service, railway transport of Ukraine, the state fiscal service, communal services and medical institutions of Kyiv, costumes for the representative delegation, and volunteers of Euro-2012 (second prize at the All-Ukrainian competition), historical tourist park "Kyivska Rus", National Academic Orchestra of Folk Instruments of Ukraine, many films and theater performances. In particular, under the leadership of the teacher of the department Assoc. N.I. Kudryavtseva, students, and teachers worked on the development of spectacular costumes for the films "My Grandmother Fanny Kaplan", and "Cyborgs", which received prestigious international awards at film festivals.
Prof. T.V. Nikolayeva, Assoc. Prof. G.V. Kokorina, I.V. Davydenko, N.I. Kudryavtseva, I.L. Gaiova, and other teachers of the Department initiated the creation of the "Costume Library" collection of historical costume replicas and organized exhibitions of historical and modern costumes, including: "History in Costumes" (2005, National Museum of Ukrainian Folk Decorative Art), "Game with Time" (2007, Alta Center), "Hubert Givenchy for Audrey Hepburn" (2010, Radisson Blu), "From Gothic to Modern" (2011, Mystetskyi Arsenal), "Body Limits" (2011, Mystetskyi Arsenal), "Ukrainian Couture" (2016 -2017, Kyiv, TsUM), "Capital fashion of the XVIII-XIX centuries: cinema and artifacts" (2017, Kyiv, Victoria Museum), the project "Costume of the countries of the East" (2018-2021, Chernihiv Historical Museum V.V. Tarnovskyi). During 2005-2021, more than 30 exhibitions of historical and national costumes were held, including during the presentation of KNUTD at the World Exhibition "EXPO-2020 Dubai" in 2022.
The academic staff of the Department have registered an initiative scientific topic “Current trends in costume design” in the Ukrainian Institute of Scientific and Technical Expertise and Information (State Registration №0120U102456, 2020-2023), scientific supervisors – Dr. Prof. T. F. Krotova and Dr. Prof. N. V. Chuprina.
Prof. O. V. Kolosnichenko is the scientific supervisor of the state budget topic “Development of design and ergonomic solutions for functional adaptive clothing for the seriously ill and the military in terms of preventing a new outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic”, 2021-2022 (State Registration №0121U109720). The main directions of scientific work of the department are:
- "Research of the tectonics of costume formation and improvement of methods of development of promising clothing collections using modern information technologies" (supervisor – Dr. Eng., Prof. K. L. Pashkevych);
- "Culturology and aesthetics of design in costume design in the context of multicultural integration" (supervisor - Doctor of Art History, Prof. T. F. Krotova);
- "Theoretical and practical foundations of aesthetic design of clothing for various purposes" (supervisor Doctor of Art History, Prof. O. V. Kolosnichenko);
- "Fashion system as an integrated field of design" (supervisor - Doctor of Art History, Prof. N. V. Chuprina).
Over the years of development of the Department, scientific and pedagogical workers carried out scientific research and by their results defended theses for a scientific degree of Candidate and Doctor of Sciences on the following topics:
- "Theoretical foundations of artistic and compositional formation of special purpose clothing" (Prof. O. V. Kolosnichenko);
- "Fashion system of the XX - early XXI century: design practices and factors of functioning" (European and Ukrainian contexts) (Prof. N. V. Chuprina);
- "Stylistic transformations in costume design: artistic means and principles of formation" (Assoc. Prof. A. I. Baranova);
- "Ethno-artistic heritage of Dominic De la Fleece in the design of modern clothing" (assistant N. P. Paranko)
- «Improvement of a designing process of the top knitwear taking into account characteristics of cloths» (Assoc. Prof. E.A. Kiselyova.);
- «Improvement of a designing process of initial clothes of irregular shape» (Assoc. Prof. V.I. Malinovsky.);
- «Development of process of reconstruction of the Ukrainian historical men's suit» (Assoc. Prof G.V. Kokorina);
- «Improvement of a method of art designing of a kidswear on the basis of the bionic principles of shaping» (Assoc. Prof. T. I. Nikolaeva).
The results of scientific research presented during the defense of theses form the basis for research work of the Department, involving students (developed in term papers and theses for Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Design).
Every year, within the framework of the conference "Topical issues of modern design", a meeting of the platform "Art and Fashion Design Trends" takes place under the direct organization and participation of the Department of Art and Fashion Design. International scientific-practical conference "Topical issues of modern design" is an annual event, conducted by the Faculty of Design of KNUTD since 2018, the purpose of which is - exchange of experience and research results on topical design problems, promoting creative cooperation of the best specialists, artists, scientists in design and art specialties of Ukraine and the world. The conference is supported by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.
